The Legal Counsel, Data Governance & Marketing Compliance will be a highly qualified, team-oriented and data-first attorney with a holistic mindset and a deep understanding of data governance principles, laws, and regulations covering a broad range of business activities. This includes privacy laws like GDPR and CCPA, strong familiarity with other global data protection laws, and marketing compliance laws and regulations. The role requires significant experience providing legal support and practical guidance on global projects and operational matters that affect data governance, privacy, and marketing practices. This is a cross-functional advisory role that involves close collaboration across the Docusign organization to support data counseling and compliance best practices for the use of broad categories of data.
You will collaborate with a broad range of Docusign business partners, including InfoSec, Product and Engineering, Marketing, and Product Legal teams. Your role will be to advise on and implement best practices for all aspects of the data lifecycle, balancing legal risk with strategic business objectives. You will partner with product counsel to advise product engineering teams and marketing teams on the ethical and responsible use of data and strong data governance.
Success in this role requires substantial SaaS technology experience to help support achieving scale in contract drafting, negotiation, and regulatory compliance support, particularly with customers, partners, and vendors. We are seeking a high performer who is adaptable, collaborative, loves to learn, has incorporated AI into augmenting capabilities, and operates with a high degree of integrity. The position demands a "get it done" attitude, initiative, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment with frequent change and ambiguity.
This position is an individual contributor role reporting to the Senior Director, Associate General Counsel, Data Governance & Privacy.
Responsibility
Provide legal advice and practical guidance on data governance across Docusign (e.g., Product, Engineering, Marketing, IT, etc) to ensure compliance with company standards and global laws governing privacy, consent management, data use and protection
Guide and advise on applicable data governance best practices, laws, and regulations, including the implementation of the data governance program and assisting in drafting of company policies
Provide timely legal advice on privacy, AI, and data protection issues, ensuring compliance with data governance and privacy laws (GDPR, CPRA) and other emerging regulatory frameworks
Support cross-functional efforts to create and improve product and organizational data governance, and ensure compliance with regulatory frameworks for managing valuable data throughout its lifecycle, including promoting the ethical and legal use of data to manage legal, operational, and reputational risk
Ensure compliance with laws and strong data stewardship related to advertising, marketing and promotional practices, consumer and data protection, including FTC regulations, Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA), CAN-SPAM Act, and applicable privacy laws
Review and approve marketing and advertising materials and content for legal and regulatory compliance, leveraging AI tools and technology where appropriate
Draft, review, and negotiate marketing-related contracts, such as agency agreements, talent releases, and content licenses
Develop and maintain marketing compliance policies, guidelines, and training materials and provide guidance to management, global business units, and sales/marketing teams
Provide sales and marketing lead generation counseling, as well as sales development privacy counseling
Research and monitor relevant legal and regulatory developments in advertising, marketing, and data privacy laws
Handle other related duties and marketing/data legal and compliance projects as needed to support Docusign business initiatives
Remote: Employee is not required to be in or near an office frequently and works from a designated remote work location for the majority of the time.

Basic
Experience with best practices in data governance, marketing compliance and privacy in SaaS, including operational matters
Prior law firm or in-house experience
5+ years of legal counseling experience in privacy and marketing-related areas
Admitted into and in good standing with a state bar or equivalent certification
Preferred
Proficient written and verbal communication skills
Exceptional academic credentials
A record of pragmatic, client-focused, and business-focused and data driven decision-making and counseling
Ability to work efficiently and appropriately leverage technology with a client-service focus in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with legal area specialists and peers at all levels of management
Ability to analyze legal risks and consult with senior attorneys as necessary
A strong understanding of industry principles, concepts, and standards in data governance, privacy and marketing laws and practices
Comfortable working in a high-activity environment, juggling many matters at once, and quickly shifting between tasks
Talent for thinking outside of the box to confront new issues and pursue novel approaches
Strong attention to detail, yet comfortable dealing with ambiguity
Takes initiative and accepts personal responsibility for work
A strong technical skill set, including proficiency with Google and MS Office applications and the ability to learn new technologies quickly, AI tools in particular
Familiarity with Docusign, Salesforce, GoogleDocs, OneTrust, JIRA, and Confluence
Pay for this position is based on a number of factors including geographic location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
Based on applicable legislation, the below details pay ranges in the following locations:
California: $141,700.00 - $227,825.00 base salary
Illinois, Colorado, Massachusetts and Minnesota: $137,100.00 - $193,725.00 base salary
Washington, Maryland, New Jersey and New York (including NYC metro area): $137,100.00 - $200,125.00 base salary
Washington DC: $141,700.00 - $200,125.00 base salary
Ohio: $120,600.00 - $170,325.00 base salary
